The Scientist I is to develop and supervise the creation of evidence-based resources within the mental fitness domain. Responsible for reading, analysing, preparing documents, presentations, white papers, translating research, and other research/education related content to educate Service Members, military family members, Commanders, health care and performance professionals, the DoD at large and the greater public in the area of psychology, sport and performance psychology, positive psychology and human performance optimization (HPO) as it applies to the military. This individual is also responsible for outreach efforts: contacting potential DoD and Federal government entities for partnership, collaboration, and/or providing services to their audience members such as providing presentations and/or educational materials. Also responsible for assisting in obtaining additional funding

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position will be in support of the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) in the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine (MEM) at the Uniformed Services University (USU), Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities:
  • Serves as key scientific resource and subject matter expert on military mental fitness topics to CHAMP and DoD at large. Reviews and translates cognitive, sports, performance, and positive psychology literature, information, and trends into educational materials (articles, videos, graphics, worksheets, etc.). Evaluates the significance of new directions and emerging trends to optimize performance in accordance with DoD missions and objectives and determines a strategic plan for domain content informed by stakeholder needs.
  • Determines community needs and develops and delivers presentations, training, curricula, and workshops to DoD stakeholders (Service Members, military family members, healthcare providers, performance professionals, military leadership, military graduate and undergraduate students, etc.) on mental fitness content that is evidence-based and military specific. Presentations are in person, virtual, and/or recorded.
  • Creates and sustains relationships with DoD stakeholders (Service Members, health care and performance providers, military leaders, etc.) to inform the creation and dissemination of materials. Engages in outreach efforts to increase the DoD and professional communities’ awareness of program’s resources. Leverages relationships to inform strategic plan for domain content.
  • Coordinates with team members to ensure a cohesive approach to content production. Works on joint, integrative products with team members.
  • Answers mental fitness questions from Service Members, military leaders, military health and performance professionals, etc. Recognized as a subject matter expert within the field.
  • Engages in scholarly writing and white paper opportunities.
  • Assists with obtaining additional funding and responsible for writing statements of work, preparing the budget, and working with PI to engage with prospective client.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Qualifications:
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience
  • Doctorate Degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in evaluating and interpreting research data and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience and knowledge in translation of research, health promotion and health education.
  • Knowledge of theories of behavior change and adult education.
  • Knowledge of DoD policies and programs related to domain area of expertise.
  • Abilities in public speaking and presenting.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, independently, and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
