Responsibilities:
Purpose: The OSUP Coder Apprentice is a functioning role under the close supervision of Revenue Integrity and experienced medical coders. The primary duty of the apprentice is to take the coding concepts learned in a medical coding program and apply them to real life scenarios. The apprentice position is designed for those with a CPC-A designation to gain required experience to obtain full CPC designation. This is a fast-paced program where the trainee will be expected to meet all required competencies and projects as assigned to continue in the apprenticeship program. Trainees will be expected to comply with medical coding guidelines and internal coding policies and work collaboratively with all program preceptors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Coding Apprentice will perform the job duties of a coder independently and under the direction of an instructor in line with the apprenticeship program curriculum and expectations. The job duties and responsibilities of the coding apprentice are as follows:
  • Evaluate cases or patient encounters and appropriate apply/code for CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10 based on supporting documentation.
  • Resolves charge entry edits by reviewing clinical documentation and/or seeking clarification from Provider
  • Review documentation to ensure accurate coding and charge capture in accordance with AMA-CPT, ICD-10-CM, National Correct coding Initiative (NCCI) and OSUP policies
  • Able to identify differences in Place of Service and coding requirements
  • Identify provider type /correct coding guidelines
  • Able to have professional direct communication with the care provider as needed to clarify or gain additional information
  • Engage in quality assurance and self-audit activities
  • Perform other miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned
  • Participate in periodic assessments
  • Basic Revenue Cycle Knowledge
  • Travel to satellite locations and clinic sites may be necessary to perform job duties
  • Ability to perform functions using job-related software and systems.
  • Attendance, promptness, professionalism, the ability to pay attention to detail, cooperativeness with co-workers and supervisors, and politeness to customers, vendors, and patients.
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
  • High school diploma and CPC-A certificate.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Excellent communication skills. Both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Working knowledge of CPT, HCPCS procedure and professional supply codes and ICD-10-CM (or current version) diagnosis codes used for billing services provided by physicians and licensed non-physician providers.
  • Ability to appropriately follow system edits and payer policy guidelines.
  • Analytical ability to gather and interpret data and develop, recommends, and implement solutions.
Pay Range: USD $18.79 - USD $28.19 /Hr.
