Job Description

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced advocate for adult learners. The Cloud Computing Career Coach is a new, grant-funded part-time position (approximately 10-16 hours per week, on average). The primary objective for the role is to support career progression for incoming, active, and recent completers of the SCPS Cloud Computing Certificate program. Students in the program often are adult learners intending to either transition into or advance within cloud computing careers. The Cloud Computing Career Coach position is intended to assist students in achieving their near-term career goals. The position reports to the Senior Director of Certificates. The hired individual will collaborate with the Senior Director to set clear and reasonable goals. The position will complement ongoing work performed by SCPS colleagues, including in recruitment, student support, program instruction, and more.


Primary objectives and duties of the position include a combination of the following:


  • Career coaching: One-on-One Calls with active Cloud Computing students (at least one per semester), designed to empower students with clarity and vision around their cloud computing education and career
  • Job search skill development: Develop and present online career-support workshops (e.g., resume and cover letter workshops, mock interviews, etc); Provide feedback on resume, cover letter, and mock interview performance
  • Employer engagement: Build the number of employers willing to interview students for open positions; Facilitate interactions with employers and students (e.g., employer panels, networking events, etc)
  • Growing the program enrollment of underserved communities: Direct contacts and meetings with referral sources of Cloud Computing students; Direct contacts with prospective Cloud Computing students, in coordination with SCPS recruiters; Attending relevant in-person and online events that further recruitment and student support goals
  • Administrative work: Planning and administrative meetings; Other duties as assigned


Funding for this position is provided through a Congressionally Directed Spending request and is intended to increase Virginia’s cloud computing industry talent, particularly by increasing representation from underserved communities. The position is part of a larger strategy that includes marketing, scholarships, career support, and supplemental training. The position is intended to last for up to two years and the anticipated hiring range is $22 - $26 per hour. The anticipated start date is June 2024.

Location requirements: Remote position, though the individual preferably lives in Virginia. Occasional travel and live meeting and event attendance is required. Must have stable internet connection and suitable conditions for frequent online, camera-on meetings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's degree

Experience: At least two years of related experience.

Licensure: None

The successful candidate may also have a combination of the following:

  • Experience working in or related to Cloud Computing positions

  • Experience with career coaching, specifically in STEM-related fields such as Cloud Computing

  • Existing network with employers with Cloud Computing needs

  • Experience with outreach and recruiting for STEM-related positions AND/OR training/academic programs

  • Experience with career support, such as resume workshops, mock interviewing etc.

  • Experience designing and hosting in-person and online networking and training events


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
