The Coding Specialist is responsible for accurately assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures based on the documentation provided in patient medical records. This role is crucial in ensuring compliance with federal regulations and reimbursement protocols, especially in a critical access hospital setting.

Qualifications
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent certification, required.
- Minimum 2+ years of coding experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a critical access hospital or similar environment.
- Associate degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, or a related field, preferred.
Responsibilities Include:
Coding Accuracy:
- Review and analyze clinical documentation to assign appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
- Ensure all codes are accurate, complete, and comply with established coding guidelines and policies.
Documentation Review:
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify any discrepancies or incomplete documentation in patient records.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations, and changes in coding practices.
Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Participate in audits and reviews to ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
- Identify and report any issues related to coding discrepancies or compliance concerns.
Patient Data Management:
- Maintain and update coding databases and patient records.
- Assist in the management of health information and ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with the billing department to resolve any coding-related billing issues.
- Provide support and training to new coding staff as needed.
Continuing Education:
- Stay current with coding changes, billing practices, and medical terminology through ongoing education and training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Proficient in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software. Preferred Epic experience.
