YOU will be responsible for managing the Community Engagement Division of the Community Development Department. You will work to empower and expand the number, longevity, and influence of our youth and adult residents, businesses, neighborhood groups, volunteers, and other stakeholders, by working collaboratively with City departments and divisions and the community. You will plan, coordinate, and lead engagement efforts and initiatives intended to increase and strengthen meaningful resident engagement; cultivate relationships with community members and organizations as well as internal City staff members working in similar fields.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in human services, public administration, planning or urban design, community development, or other relevant field required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct work experience in community outreach and engagement or community organization development and working with diverse groups of people including minority populations, youth and adults.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of practices and techniques of community organizing and communicating to large groups and knowledge of group problem solving processes.
  • Requires the ability to prepare effective written communication, and the ability to communicate effectively verbally. Must be detail oriented, possess strong organizational and follow-up skills, and have the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to create and maintain harmonious relationships with diverse populations.
  • Performs duties under the limited supervision of the Community Development Department Director and Deputy Directors.
  • May require working non-standard hours including evening and weekends.
  • Requires some local travel.
  • This is an exempt position.
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
