Job Title: Controller/Assistant Treasurer

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Department: Responsible Stewardship

Classification: Full Time, Exempt

Date: April 2024

Summary/Objective

The Controller is responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and reporting on financial transactions for the Conference. In performing these functions, the Controller is responsible for ensuring compliance with laws, appropriate internal controls and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Work is to be conducted in a manner that assists the Conference in achieving its mission and ministries. The Controller proactively and upon request performs financial analysis to ensure the accuracy of financial reporting and the efficiency of the operation of the Conference programs and activities. The Controller works closely with the Human Resource Manager, the Administrative Services Support Manager, and the Chief Financial Officer.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

1. Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer to evaluate, modify and/or establish accounting processes and practices to ensure financial accountability and transparency.

2. Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer and Responsible Stewardship Committee to evaluate, modify and/or create standard financial reports to be distributed to superintendents of annual conference ministries and other related ministries.

3. Oversee the receipt and processing of all incoming funds.

4. Oversee payment and disbursement of all routine items payable.

5. Oversee reconciliation of balance sheet accounts on a timely basis.

6. Prepare entries for annual conference payroll and investment activities under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer.

7. Coordinate annual audit in consultation with the Council on Finance and Administration and under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer.

8. Perform the monthly close of the books and records within the designated timeframe established by the Chief Financial Officer to meet constituent needs for reporting on the conference’s performance.

9. Facilitate production of the monthly financial statements and supplemental reports of the Conference.

10. Track restrictions associated with all funds of the Conference.

11. Lead internal support of the annual independent audit of the Conference’s financial results.

12. Provide support and guidance to churches regarding accounting and finance functions for the Conference and recommended procedures of church-level controls, processes, and reporting.

13. Perform miscellaneous projects as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer to help facilitate strategic planning and initiatives as they relate the Responsible Stewardship.

Additional Duties/Responsibilities

1. Support the collection of annual budget data and work with Chief Financial Officer to finalize. Upload budget into the Conference’s accounting system.

2. Support Chief Financial Officer in financial management of grants received and requested.

Supervisory Duties

None.

Job Qualifications

1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with fund accounting and other non-profit accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with various accounting and reporting platforms is highly desirable.
  • Ability to design reports and complete data analysis after extracting data from the accounting and other databases of the Conference.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Self-directed and able to set and meet necessary deadlines.
  • Ability to work with and guide constituents that have limited knowledge in financial systems and procedures.
  • Willing to support departmental programs and tasks that are not directly related to function.

2. Education or Formal Training:

a. A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business related field.

b. Certified Public Accountant preferred.

3. Experience:

a. A minimum of five years of experience, preferably with nonprofit/church accounting.

b. Working knowledge of the basic polity and structure of the United Methodist Church ideal.

c. Two to three years of project management experience is required.

Working Environment

General business and office environment with significant remote work required.

Collaborative teamwork required. Periodic travel required.
