Position Summary

The Director of Dental Programs is a key managerial role tasked with overseeing the administration, coordination, and enhancement of the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs, as well as any future dental programs. This position involves strategic planning to ensure program effectiveness, compliance with accreditation standards, alignment with industry trends, and connections with our program partners from industry and education. The Director provides leadership to faculty and staff in teaching, learning, and service by focusing on the individual and modeling respect, dignity, and integrity; facilitates curriculum development; fosters partnerships with external stakeholders; and promotes a supportive learning environment conducive to student achievement and professional growth within the dental field. Provides leadership in developing programmatic and departmental goals and objectives, ensuring the educational philosophy and alignment with institutional vision, mission and long- and short-range goals of the college.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions

1.


Supervision
  • Hires, evaluates performance, trains, disciplines, and recommends dismissal.
  • Assures that required personnel forms and records are generated and maintained for assigned areas.
  • Reviews and authorizes leave requests, purchase orders, professional growth, and travel requests.
  • Follows state rules in ensuring faculty maintain necessary licensure and in processing required criminal background checks.
  • Serves on screening committees and recommends candidates for faculty appointment, retention, and promotion.

Dental Program Operations
  • Collaborate with faculty to map program objects, learning outcomes, and competencies to course content and instructional activities.
  • Leverage comprehensive program reviews, outcome reports, improvement plans, and other assessments/standards/feedback to improve course design.
  • Develop clinical competency and performance standards for dental assisting and hygiene students, including assessment tools, rubrics, etc.
  • Develop departmental budgets.
  • Serves as the authority and responsible party for curriculum development, evaluation, and revision.
  • Develop and implement a framework of assessment strategies for dental programs, including formative and summative assessments, practical skills assessments, and clinical evaluations.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for faculty.
  • Communicates and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders regarding program goals, priorities, achievements, and challenges.
  • Establish and administrate program advisory committees.
  • Conducts strategic planning, including a comprehensive analysis of the internal and external environment, market trends, industry demands, regulatory changes, etc.
  • Develops and maintains strong external partnerships.

Student Advising & Support
  • Develop and implement orientation programs for new students in the dental programs.
  • Leads program and career advising for students.
  • Monitors student progress and academic performance and champions student support systems.

Accreditation & Compliance
  • Regularly conduct comprehensive reviews of the CODA standards for applicable programs.
  • Coordinates the preparation of accreditation and compliance documentation, reports, program reviews, etc.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to gather evidence and documentation demonstrating compliance with CODA standards.
  • Trains and supports faculty and staff on CODA standards, processes, and expectations.
  • Leads quality improvement initiatives and policy development.

Screening Criteria

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education – A Master’s degree from a program accredited by CODA, with documentation of preparation and experience in curriculum and teaching in a dental program, is required.
  • Experience – At least twelve (12) months of dental hygienist or Dentist clinical experience, and twelve (12) months of college teaching for dental programs, and twelve (12) months as a DANB Certified Dental Assistant (or equivalent certification) is required.
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute for the requirement(s).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Dentist licensure in the State of Oregon
  • Doctoral degree in Dentistry.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Core Competencies)
  • Knowledge – Career and technical education content areas, specifically dental programs, and academic/transfer content areas, college readiness, andragogy and current issues, pedagogy related to CTE, and program accreditation for dental programs. Must also know and understand the mission and functions of a multi-campus comprehensive community college; strategic planning and budget processes; faculty and staff evaluation and professional development; computer applications; the role of a regional comprehensive community college in the economic, social, and cultural fabric of the community. A sophisticated working-knowledge of the Faculty Contract, Classified Contract, and in dealing with the Faculty and Classified collective bargaining contracts and their representatives. These matters include, but are not limited to; workload issues, overloads/overtime, benefits, working conditions, and rights and responsibilities of faculty and the College.
  • Skills – Strong verbal and written communication skills; conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills; listening skills; current and relevant computer skills; budgeting skills; leadership and supervisory skills; and planning and organizational skills

Other Requirements
  • Dental Hygienist or Dentist; AND DANB CDA or Dentist, licensed to practice in Oregon.
  • For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30-days of employment, and maintenance of an acceptable driving record are required.

  • Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials under 5 lbs. daily, 5-25 lbs. occasionally, and over 25 lbs. infrequently. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

This is a Managerial/Supervisory position in the Dental Programs department pending program accreditation. Starting compensation will be based on Grade L of the 23-24 salary schedule (Download PDF reader), in accordance with initial placement per the current Management, Administrative, and Confidential Employee Handbook.
