Why us, why now?
The AAMC Data Governance Platform referred to as Data1, is a critical component of the enterprise data governance program that includes a metadata repository, data catalog, and business glossary. Data1 provides staff with an integrated view of technical and business-oriented information about all data assets, including databases, database objects, surveys, data integrations, and other data-related documentation.
The Data1 tool was recently migrated to the Alation Data Catalog. The work now is focused on maturing the data governance program within Data1 including establishing data lineage.
We are seeking an experienced Data Governance Program Leader to join our growing data governance team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and leading the implementation of our enterprise-wide data governance program. You will work closely with business stakeholders, data stewards, and IT teams to establish standards, policies, and processes that ensure the reliability, security, and compliance of our critical business data. The Data Governance Program Lead position is instrumental in ensuring the capabilities that exist currently in the Data1 tool are maintained and continue to mature. This role is vital to assisting the Data Gov team manage data as a protected and proprietary asset for the AAMC.

Data Governance Skills – Data1 Data Catalog Manager/Lead
  • Proven ability to lead the design and implementation of enterprise-wide data governance programs.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and facilitating workshops/meetings.
  • Knowledge of data modeling, data architecture, and data engineering concepts.
  • Hands-on experience establishing and leveraging data governance technology, including Collibra, Alation, Informatica, Atlan, etc. Alation Data Catalog is preferred.
  • Participates and can lead the tactical layer of (data) stewards representing business areas across AAMC, charged with governing data and managing data governance initiatives and projects within their respective domain.
  • Familiarity with workflow configuration, APIs, and integrations to facilitate automation with various datastores, including relational, non-relational, and SaaS solutions.
  • Develops communities and roles to encompass all asset types of the organization. Analyze and make recommendations for enhancements to Data1 data catalog and the user experience interfaces.
  • Designs database structures to facilitate capturing metadata information. Familiarity to develop code to extract and transform metadata using legacy Python programming. Experience with Alation platform capabilities such as analytics, compose preferred.
  • Develops, documents, manages, and provides direction on data governance policies, processes, standards, and procedures to the enterprise.
  • Collaborates with external teams such as data privacy and information security teams to ensure our data governance standards and policies comply with data privacy and security requirements. And works closely with these teams to ensure the data governance framework and management of data assets is aligned with the AAMC relevant privacy and security laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Champions AAMC data access policies and procedures in partnership with Information Security and can identify where existing processes and policies may be lacking.
  • Works with business and technology teams to implement the Data Catalog (Data 1), Data Lineage, and Data Quality programs
  • Identifies KPIs and understands maturity models to demonstrate maturity progression within the Data Governance program.
  • DCAM experience and/or certification is a plus.
  • Supports the education of data governance best practices across AAMC, including providing training and education to all Data1 users and the larger AAMC enterprise.
Data Management Skills:
  • Oversees data governance processes that ensure metadata stays up-to-date and accurate. (e.g., asset review certification processes)
  • Measures the adoption of data governance policies and business value of data quality improvement leveraging Alation analytics; conducts data quality assessments and implements measures to improve data accuracy, completeness, and consistency for business-critical data.
  • Applies knowledge of systems, data, and customer requirements to uncover problems and recommend solutions.
  • Accountable for maintaining standard terms and definitions for common data fields for enterprise data and learner profiles.
What you'll bring to the role:
Required Niche Skills:
  • Data Governance expertise that includes the development, socialization, and administration of data governance processes, procedures, policies, principles, and standards typically developed over 10 years of experience.
  • Experience maturing data management programs including Data Quality, Data Catalog, Data Lineage, Enterprise Data Management (aka MDM), Data Literacy and Data Risk Advanced Knowledge of Industry leading Data Catalog tools – (Alation, Collibra) Alation is highly desired & preferred.
  • Data strategy experience. Being able to understand the strategic needs of the organization and adapt quickly to ensure the data is there at the right time for the right purpose.
  • Collaborative and engaging, with the ability to influence others when necessary to support data needs of the enterprise.
  • Ability to drive consensus among stakeholders, manage expectations, and build strong relationships.
  • Solid data analysis ability to explore data and be aware of current data analytics trends and technology.
  • Understanding of data lineage and automated data mapping.
  • Excellent communication skills – consultancy background a plus.
  • Knowledge of dashboards and data visualization tools. Power BI is preferred.
  • Proven management of cross-functional teams without direct supervision
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and differentiate between distractions and the roadblocks that can impact goals.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Management, or Business with strong Data-related concentration.
  • Proven experience (8-10 years) in data governance or data management. Experience establishing and maturing an enterprise data governance program strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, and cloud-based data management tools.
  • Background or solid foundation of enterprise information management: (including data profiling, data modeling, enterprise data management, metadata, reference data, and data quality).
  • Strong knowledge of data governance principles, frameworks, and industry best practices.
  • Familiarity with data privacy and security regulations (e.g., GDPR, PIPL, CCPA) and their implications on data governance.
  • Experience in developing and implementing enterprise data governance policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and data quality assessment techniques.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and influence business and technical stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities with a keen attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with data governance tools, metadata management tools, and data cataloging solutions.
  • Certifications in data governance, data management, or related fields (e.g., CDMP, DAMA) are a plus.

Remote Work Eligibility
This position is eligible for remote work in the contiguous US
Compensation Grade Range and Mid-Point
Grade Range:$102,900.00 - $191,100.00/ Grade Mid-Point:$147,000.00
The above annual compensation range and mid-point are general guidelines. For candidates who meet the criteria, the AAMC's compensation philosophy is to target the midpoint of the salary range. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, as well as internal equity, market, and business considerations.
If a bachelor’s degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions. One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
