Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.

Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400
enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a full-time Payroll Specialist. This position prepares agency payrolls and related reports for all employees of the agency. Directly responsible for managing all employee leave for the agency. Collaborates with Human Resources, Academic Affairs, Workforce Solutions, and the VCCS Shared Services Center (SSC) to ensure accuracy of employee pay and leave. Provides friendly customer services regarding payroll to all college employees. Communicates information accurately and timely to stakeholders.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
Required at Hire:
Experience and/or coursework in accounting. Payroll processing and leave management experience. Experience with formal HR laws, policies, processes and systems. Experience using WORD, EXCEL, ACCESS and/or other software relative to spreadsheets and payroll preparation. Experience running reports, as well as analyzing and auditing data. Experience working collaboratively with other departments to accomplish complex tasks and projects. Considerable knowledge of State and Federal regulations regarding different types of pay issues. Thorough knowledge of payroll and fringe benefits accounting policies and procedures. Excellent verbal and written organizational and communication skills. Ability to read and interpret rules and regulations. Knowledge of general accounting principles and procedures. Knowledge and understanding of FLSA regulations. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines. Ability to work independently with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. Ability to process confidential information in a discreet, professional manner. Outstanding knowledge and skill with various computer software programs such as Access, Excel and Word. Highly skilled in keyboarding. Strong sense of priorities and deadlines.

Additional Considerations
Preferred at Hire:
Experience in Cardinal Payroll System, as well as PeopleSoft. Finance or payroll experience at a Commonwealth of Virginia agency, preferably in higher education. Strong working knowledge of the Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAPP). Excellent ability to analyze payroll transactions and make accurate conclusions as to the effect on all aspects of the employee’s pay, benefits and voluntary deductions.
