Job Description

South Shore Insurance Underwriters (SSIU) is a dynamic Gulf Coast owned and operated MGA (Managing General Agent) currently experiencing exciting growth across our footprint. We provide property and casualty agents with the best excess and surplus lines products available across coastal Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Texas and Georgia – with continued plans for expansion, and are looking to add an Underwriter to our Team.


Under the guidance of the Underwriting Manager, responsible for deciding whether to accept applications for insurance cover. Determining risk is a complex process and this position relies on sensible judgement and meticulous attention to detail. The Underwriter must ensure that accurate quotes are produced which are both competitive for the customer but also profitable for the company. Primary focus on Property and Casualty for Personal and Commercial Lines.


Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Review insurance applications and documentation to determine if the applicant is an acceptable risk in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Recommends appropriate premiums and coverage for risks after analysis and review of applicant documentation, business factors and competitive situations.
  • Demonstrates a professional and courteous attitude with agents, which includes responding promptly and ethically to all requests and issues. Delivers on promises and only promises what can be delivered.
  • Provides accurate and thorough education to agents about the company’s risk selection philosophy and pricing guidelines.
  • Makes field visits to agent’s offices to build relationships and solicit new business applications.
  • Ensures compliance with underwriting strategies and regulatory compliance.

Other requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a Business or Risk Management emphasis preferred
  • Excess & surplus lines experience
  • High school Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum one-year insurance underwriting experience; education may be substituted for required experience. CPCU, CIC, AINS, CRM or other insurance designations preferred
  • Working knowledge of Windows PC, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel is required
