Strategic Communications Specialist

Salary: $68,000 - $75,000 exempt DOE

Status: At-Will, Full-Time (40 hours a week)

Remote Work: The position is eligible for up to 50% remote work. The remainder will be onsite in Anchorage, Alaska. Up to a 60-day fully remote transition period to accommodate a move to Alaska. Relocation assistance may be available.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage communications projects from start to finish:

-Facilitate strategic communication plan development with staff and key stakeholders.

-May include focus groups, interviews, group workshopping sessions, survey development, etc.

-Develop a work plan to guide the implementation of the strategic communications plan.

-Manage implementation of the work plan, including creating and sticking to timelines.

-Oversee the creation, tracking, and evaluation of communications tasks and strategies.

-Navigate ambiguity, maintain flexibility, and work autonomously.

Design communications initiatives:

· Design, create, and deliver communication initiatives to support the organization and individual initiatives and projects.

· Implement marketing strategies and promotional campaigns to increase audience engagement and change behavior.

· Develop and edit communication materials such as social media posts, newsletters, blogs, and press releases.

· Ensure that all materials present a clear, unified, and positive image for the organization and/or brand.

· Ensure that outward-facing communications are ADA accessibility compliant as needed.

· Coordinate with others to arrange photography and/or press coverage for special events

Track and report on communications successes and challenges

· Track and measure the success of communications initiatives, providing regular reports to senior management.

· Leverage data and insights to drive internal communications strategies and campaigns, optimizing the strategy based on past results and future needs.

· Promote and report on milestones and activities such as social media metrics, goals, projects, services, reports and other successes.

Manage and maintain external communications channels:

· Manage external communication channels like social media platforms, websites, and media relations.

· Offer technical support across all communications-related deliverables (e.g., strategic communications plans, content creation, writing and editing, design services, multimedia, printing, web content, etc.).

Health Communications Neuromarketing Lab

· Assist with designing and implementing studies and research in our Health Communications Neuromarketing Lab.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE IDEAL APPLICANT

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, or marketing or

o Five (5) years of experience managing strategic communications in a government or public sector setting or

o Five (5) years of experience in strategic planning, audience identification, engagement, and evaluation with measurable impact or

o Five (5) years of experience managing strategic communication projects engaging multiple stakeholders, achieving specific outcomes within set deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented individual with proven project management, problem-solving, and communication abilities.

Manage communications projects from start to finish:

· Ability to design and implement comprehensive strategic communications plans to achieve organizational objectives.

· Ability to balance tasks associated with more than one project concurrently while handling frequent interruptions and changing deadlines

· Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with exceptional judgment and the ability to pay close attention to detail and deliver against tight timelines.

· Keen process orientation and ability to work independently to solve problems.

· Sensitivity to cultural diversity and a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

· Understanding of management principles and the ability to engage effectively with team members at all levels.

Design communications initiatives:

· Proficiency in graphic design skills and understanding of principles that contribute to effective social media posts, including visual aesthetics, messaging, and audience engagement strategies.

· Knowledge of best practices in writing and messaging for various platforms, including social media.

· Understanding health communication theory and how to apply it to campaign development.

Track and report on communications successes and challenges

· Ability to analyze social media metrics, interpret data insights, and provide recommendations to refine and optimize strategic communication plans for enhanced effectiveness.

Manage and maintain external communications channels:

· Experience using social media in a health and/or public relations campaign.

· Experience with using WordPress for web design and website maintenance.

Health Communications Neuromarketing Lab

· Experience with neuromarketing or curiosity and interest in learning.

· Interest in using science to improve communications efficacy and impact.

General knowledge skills and abilities:

· Excellent communication skills, including writing, speaking, and active listening.

· A willingness to navigate ambiguity, working autonomously and sometimes outside the scope of work.

· Capacity for detail-oriented work and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

· Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite, Hootsuite, Clicktime (or other timekeeping apps), WordPress, and Asana (or other project management apps).

· Exhibit work habits suited to independent and remote work, including self-motivation, self-discipline, and the ability to manage distractions effectively.

· Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Physical Requirements: The work environment characteristics described here represent those that an employee should meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The employee must handle paperwork, operate computer equipment, and communicate effectively in writing and orally with staff and the public. Rare evening and weekend hours are required. Additionally, this work can be physical and requires exertion; one must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds. The job requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communications and to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities. The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions daily, cold, heat, and noise.

The Center for Safe Alaskans is at 4241 B Street, Suite 100, Anchorage, Alaska. Work is frequently conducted in the community, and the Strategic Communications Specialist must attend meetings and events outside the office. Remote work expectations and requirements will be communicated in a Remote Work Agreement.
