Job Description

The California Energy Commission (CEC) is seeking to hire one engineering student assistant to support the Efficiency Division's energy hotline.

The student assistant will provide technical information to engineers, building contractors, architects, and homeowners regarding the State Energy Building Code. In addition, the student assistant will provide technical assistance to staff, research and prepare responses to correspondences, and become familiar with state energy efficiency codes, manuals, forms, and computer software used to assist the building industry.

Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.


Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).


Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a cumulative 2.0 GPA or above.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing).
  • Ability to establish and maintain good work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive and answer technical inquiries by telephone and email from California
    building departments, homeowners, building contractors, architects, and engineers regarding the state energy building codes including applications, interpretations and policies.
  • Provide support to users of public domain building modeling software including, instructions on how to use the software, and provide building performance technical recommendations related to envelope, mechanical, and water heating systems that improve the energy performance of a building.
  • Provide support to users of compliance documentation (forms) including where to access the forms, provide instruction and assistance on how to complete the forms, and identify and communicate compliance and coding issues with the forms to staff.
  • Identify and communicate errors in the residential and nonresidential compliance manuals to staff for correction and inclusion in the compliance manual errata.
  • Draw graphics using 3D software (i.e. SketchUp) to provide visuals of the building energy components for publications, including the: Blueprint Newsletter, Residential Compliance Manual, Nonresidential Compliance Manual, ICC Energy Code Significant Changes Guidebook, etc.
  • Assist staff prepare for outreach and education events and exhibitor booths,
    including but not limited to printing publications and flyers, folding pamphlets, boxing, and shipping materials, etc.
  • Attend and participate in ongoing Energy Code training both internally and
    externally (i.e. Energy Code Ace) to ensure technical knowledge is up-to-date with current Energy Code and related building code issues.
  • Develop and provide trainings using PowerPoint to assist fellow and new Hotline students in understanding the new Energy Code requirements for each Code cycle.
  • Assist staff in making energy code publications more user-friendly and feasible to navigate including hyperlinking tables of content, section references, table references, indexes, etc.
  • Research and prepare analyses for, and responses to correspondence, in
    consultation with appropriate technical staff.
  • Collect and provide preliminary data for staff to use in the analysis of topics including:
    climatic data, building thermal performance, and appliance efficiency.
  • Respond to requests from the public for publications, complete mail-outs, and faxes, and track these requests to document the demand for Energy Code publications (i.e. hard copies).
  • Other duties that require consistent with the above responsibilities and duties.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in a remote environment.

Students will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
