Researches, develops, and edits medical and scientific information to create relevant, science-based content that provides compelling resources and tools and provides value and support for health-related professionals (clinicians, nurses, social workers, public health professionals, payors, providers, etc.) in the oncology field Includes targeted and tailored content for resources, toolkits, curricula, print materials, PowerPoint presentations, social media messaging, etc. Content development includes translation of complex information into understandable content at appropriate levels for the intended audiences.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Critically evaluates medical literature to assess reliability and relevance of findings for professional audiences.
  • Writes, edits and reviews cancer-related content for cancer.org and other digital platforms, publications, resources, toolkits, print materials, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Makes corrections, recommendations, and suggestions for editorial changes in existing professional content as appropriate.
  • Ensures and maintains accurate professional content that is current and balanced.
  • Performs original writing and editing of cancer information.
  • Assists in the development of new methods of educating health professionals about oncology issues.
  • Maintains integrity of content to ensure consistency with ACS guidelines, policies, philosophy, and strategic goals.
  • Collaborates with leadership and Production and Development team to identify learning needs of professionals and develop strategies to address needs and ongoing education.
  • Writes for special projects, news articles, newsletters, columns, and/or other digital media.
  • Other projects as necessary.


FORMAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Master's degree required, PhD preferred, in health communications, behavioral health, public health, health sciences, implementation sciences, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 3+ years' medical/professional writing experience.
  • Adult learning knowledge preferred.
  • American Medical Writers Association certification preferred.

OTHER SKILLS

  • Ability to synthesize information from medical/scientific literature and communicate such information and responses to complex medical questions in plain language.
  • Commitment to patient education.
  • Excellent medical writing skills and computer/Internet literacy, with proficiency in editorial and analytical abilities.
  • Working knowledge of AMA and other editorial styles as well as readability and health literacy issues; able to organize and write medical content for people at high school grade levels and lower.
  • Ability to write easy to understand cancer-related information.
  • Adept in Microsoft Word, Excel and searching electronic databases.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Creative thinker.
  • Ability to work in team environment with writers, editors, and other medical professionals.
  • Experience interacting with internal stakeholders including integrative marketing, corporate communications, design, and user experience.


SPECIAL MENTAL OR PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

The starting rate is $69,000 to $83,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
